I Carry Your Heart

by Briana — November 4, 2014

October has been a…month. Between my own health issues, the death of a friend from school, and the impending deployment of my boyfriend (tomorrow morning), I have been a mess. I loved Bridget’s Medusa costume because Medusa is an excellent symbol for my life right now. In ancient Greek mythology, Medusa’s head was placed on the shields of warriors (including Athena’s) because it was believed she warded off evil. If I had a shield to carry around right now, you best bet it would have Medusa’s head on it.

As an artist, I turn to art of all kinds when I’m stressed out. I love browsing poetry, and lately have been reading a lot of Frank O’Hara and e.e. cummings. It’s a classic, but if you haven’t ever read it, “i carry your heart” might be one of my favorite poems ever. And if Medusa is a good symbol for my life right now, “i carry your heart” is a good poem for my life. I’m not looking forward to spending months away from the person I love, with limited communication. But I’ll carry his heart (I’ll carry it in my heart).

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)

nbsp;

                                                      i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

nbsp;

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)
